Hamlet in original form

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark: Actors in Butterfly Creek Theatre Troupe’s production of Hamlet include, from left, Laurence Ward (Horatio), Andy Hall (Marcellus) and Benjamin Haddock (Hamlet).

Butterfly Creek Theatre Troupe’s production of Hamlet gives audience the chance to experience the play as Shakespeare intended it, says director Emanuel Garcia.

Garcia’s true-to-time realisation of the play features minimal props and sets, and simple costumes chosen by each of the actors for their own characters.

As with previous ‘Bard in the Yard’ performances, Hamlet will be performed outside at Muritai School.

In this production (as in Shakespeare’s time) the players will be addressing and moving around the audience throughout the play.

Butterfly Creek regulars team up with several new ‘ troupies’ for this production, including Eastbourne local Iain Gordon, who has written original music for the play and will perform on the mandolin during the production, and Stagecraft Theatre regulars Ben Haddock (playing Hamlet) and Harriet Prebble (Ophelia).

Garcia himself also appears in the play as Polonius, a role he will be playing with original Shakespearean pronunciation.

Troupe member Sophie Young says with poetry, poignancy and a fantastic sword fight, this version of Hamlet delivers all the open-air drama that the Bard intended.
