SUMMARY:The Taming of the Shrew
DESCRIPTION:From 17 – 21 February 2009 we put on a highly successful outdoor Summer Shakespeare production of The Taming of the Shrew as part of 2009 FringeNZ with an all-female cast. This was the Troupe’s 13th annual Shakespeare production. \nJohn Marwick\, who had then directed 10 of these productions\, was intrigued by the challenge of putting on a contemporary version of a comedy that\, on the face of it\, is about a man who ‘tames’ an unruly wife by starving her and depriving her of sleep. He had originally toyed with the idea of gender-reversal as a way of bringing a new perspective: perhaps if Kate was played by a man while Petruchio was played by a woman the audience response would change. In the event\, the available cast better suited an all-female production – a complete reversal of the original Elizabethan all-male casting. \nThe play was set in a more or less contemporary and largely New Zealand world and didn’t take itself too seriously. \n\n2009 Taming of the Shrew – William Shakespeare15 photos\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\nCast In order of speaking\n\n\nLucentio\, of Pisa\, son to Vincentio\nSuzanne Levy\n\n\nTranio\, Lucentio´s servant\nPip Weston\n\n\nBaptista Minola\, a rich gentleman of Padua\nSandra Gillespie\n\n\nGremio\, of Padua\nFlorence McFarlane\n\n\nKatherina\, Baptista´s elder daughter\nRowan Macrae\n\n\nHortensio\, of Padua\nKat Angus\n\n\nBianca\, Baptista´s younger daughter\nElspeth Harris\n\n\nBiondello\, servant to Lucentio\nTamsin Bertaud-Gandar\n\n\nPetruchio\, of Verona\nLiz Sugrue\n\n\nGrumio\, Petruchio´s servant\nSarah-Rose Burke\n\n\nA Maid\nSue Jones\n\n\nCurtis\, servant in Petruchio´s house\nSue Jones\n\n\nNathaniel\, servant in Petruchio´s house\nPip Weston\n\n\nPhilip\, servant in Petruchio´s house\nTamsin Bertaud-Gandar\n\n\nJoseph\, servant in Petruchio´s house\nSandra Gillespie\n\n\nNicholas\, servant in Petruchio´s house\nSuzanne Levy\n\n\nMerchant\nCarol Thompson\n\n\nHaberdasher\nFlorence McFarlane\n\n\nTailor\nElspeth Harris\n\n\nVincentio\, a rich gentleman of Pisa\nSue Jones\n\n\nWidow\nCarol Thompson\n\n\nProduction\n\n\nDirector\nJohn Marwick\n\n\nProducer\nJulia Stuart\n\n\nStage Manager\nTheo Nettleton\n\n\nCostumes\nCarol Thompson\n\n\nProperties\nJulia Stuart\n\n\nSound\nRay Dickinson\n\n\nLighting\nChris Jones\n\n\nSignage\nSteve Wilson\n\n\nRehearsal assistant\nSue Lennox\n\n\nFront of House\nPatricia and Ed Hickey\n\n\nPhotography\nKen George Photography Ltd\n\n\n\nWhat the Critics Said\n-Top- \nReviewed by John Smythe\nIn his review on Theatreview John described the production as “Footrot Flats meets Outrageous Fortune”. In place of Shakespeare’s play-within-a-play induction\, in this production the actors\, dressed in tights and T-shirts\, danced on to the stage to girl-band music and proceeded to don their costumes and their characters on stage. The whole cast remained in view throughout the play commenting on the action and adding live sound effects. \nAs well as very strong performances from Liz Sugrue as Petruchio and Rowan Macrae as Kate\, the production brought out a lot of the humour in the Bianca sub-plot (played by Elspeth Harris). \nThe show enjoyed good weather (only one night was moved into the school hall because of rain) and the large houses were very appreciative.
