SUMMARY:Pygmalion

I’m working with a great cast committed to bringing this classic to today’s audience with all the freshness of its first showing in 1914.\nWhen GBS wrote the play travel was still the prerogative of the ‘well-to-do’ and thus Professor Higgins could place a person’s place of birth within a mile in London with the utmost confidence\, knowing that they lived and died without venturing any distance from their birthplace.\nAfter the 1914 – 1918 war people moved further afield and George Bernard Shaw would have had difficulty being quite so specific in writing of Higgins’ confident assessment of everyone’s origin by their speech alone.\nOur speech defines us even today; without thinking we categorise people by their speech. English\, being the most widely used language on the globe has the most variation of accent and speech patterns of any language. Therefore we\, born to it\, criticise other English speakers and take pride in our ability to ‘place’ a speaker in country or class.\nThe story as told then can be seen repeated today as migrants struggle to a achieve a decent standard of living in a new country handicapped by their background of ‘foreign’ speech.\nThe play is presented in its original setting of London just before the “Great War” when class was still paramount and your speech patterns and accent defined you for life.\nWhile the subject is serious “Pygmalion” is a comedy with a wealth of contrasting characters\, each with their foibles and prejudices striving to put their point across\, as I am in directing this great play. Thank you\, George Bernard Shaw. \nAlan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe spotted Shaw’s wonderful story\, turning it into their smash hit My Fair Lady. \n

SUMMARY:Three Sisters
DESCRIPTION:The mid-year production in 2014 was Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters directed by Emanuel E Garcia. \nWatch on YouTube \n\n2014 Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov24 photos\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n	\n\n\nComments from Local Artist & Poet Suzanne Herschell\nWell\, I went to 3 Sisters tonight. The play deserved a much bigger audience because it was simply amazing\, Was there anything for a critic to find fault with? The set was so good\, the Marc Chagall images a wonderful evocative backdrop\, costumes lovely. But what really stunned me was the individual acting. Each person owned their character and played the particular role so well with distinct personality. It is unfair to single out any actors when they were all superb. And the play\, subtle and in turns quiet\, provocative\, thoughtful\, humorous. And I loved the flow of movement from one scene to another and across the stage levels with artistically framed cameos. Clever indeed. Wow it was good\, a professional presentation. In fact I’m going to go again – on the last night. Congratulations! It is truly a work of art. \nFrom the Director\nAnton Chekhov’s Three Sisters\, written in 1900 and premièred at the Moscow Art Theatre in 1901 with a cast that included Stanislavsky\, is above all a play about hopes and dreams.  Set in a  unknown town far from Moscow\, Chekhov presents with subtle and challenging ‘brush strokes’\, a tableau wherein quintessentially Russian characters — and therefore quintessentially universal ones — meander through lives of variegated fulfilment. The action occurs not long before the tremendous upheaval of the Russian revolution that shook the world and the interweaving of the lives of the protagonists shows a complex glimpse of a society on the verge of irrevocable change. \n For the BCTT production I have chosen to emphasise that aspect of the drama which Chekhov himself aspired to\, namely\, the fate of dreams\, and with the inspiration of the images of another great Russian artist\, Marc Chagall\, we hope to provide an evening that will resonate for audiences in Eastbourne and the general Wellington region.\n\nWatch this production on YouTube\n \n

The production will be for just five nights – at 7.30 Tuesday to Saturday 4 – 8 March – and it will be outdoors in the specially-built stage area at Eastbourne’s Muritai School – so bring warm clothes (if it’s wet or really miserable we move into the floor of the adjoining school hall). Doors (and the bar) open at 7 p.m.\nThe venue is restricted to 100 seats and they quite often sell out – book now and be sure that you don’t miss out!\n\nWatch the performance on YouTube\nPart 1\n\n\nPart 2

SUMMARY:Communicating Doors
DESCRIPTION:John Marwick directed Alan Ayckbourn’s Communicating Doors on an elaborate set in October 2012. ” \nTime for a giggle\, a laugh\, a shock and a bit of suspense. \n\n2012 Communicating Doors – Alan Ayckbourn23 photos\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n	\n\n\nPublicity 2012\nHave you ever wondered what is behind those locked doors in your hotel room? Playwright Alan Ayckbourn wondered enough to write a play with the mysterious doors as its central theme. He had gazed at the secret doors which always lead to other rooms and which are always locked\, giving him what he called a “Tardis feeling” as if you could go through into a different time zone. \nThe result was his riotous time-travelling comedy-thriller Communicating Doors\, Butterfly Creek Theatre Troupe’s next 25th anniversary production\, opening mid-October. \nDirector John Marwick describes the play as one of the funniest he has ever directed and full of surprises. “It is a winner for a fun night out and it’s right in your own backyard”\, he says. “It is not without its directorial challenges though. Not only does it lurch through three different time zones across 40 years\, but the set requires a working bathroom\, a revolving door and a balcony on a high rise hotel.” \nThis is the setting for a series of Dr Who-like scenarios with the added extra of Ayckbourn’s wonderful wit and humour. It will get audiences laughing and puzzling while genuinely delivering suspense and the odd shock. English actress Julia McKenzie who starred in one of the early productions said “if Hitchcock had written a farce\, this would be it.” Ayckbourn himself admitted he had drawn on elements of Psycho and Back to the Future\, genres that had always intrigued him.

He says he was inspired to join us after seeing our successful 2010 production of Measure for Measure. We’re delighted to have him join us\, for while we’re very proud of our past achievements\, we’re always wanting to learn. Manny brings a unique approach to directing \, employing techniques of psychological interpretation and performance enhancements; techniques from his “day job” with classical musicians and other creative people. \nSo\, expect to see something different with our production of one of the wittiest of the Bard’s comedies.
