A playful interpretation of Shakespeare’s much-loved romantic comedy, this year’s Bard in the Yard summer production by the Butterfly Creek Theatre Troupe gives As You Like It a contemporary New Zealand political twist. Comic boundaries are explored in a variety of new ways – costuming, the theatricality of a wrestling match and using karaoke music; while Shakespeare’s exploration of gender identity/fluidity is extended with of one of the play’s wooing couples being of the same sex.
