The Butterfly Creek Theatre Troupe’s last production for the year, opening October 21st , is The Dresser by Ronald Harwood, a comedy with a bite set in war-torn England.

The play centres around the relationship between an ageing and tyrannical Shakespearean actor-manager “Sir” who is trying to keep his company together during difficult times and his faithful and downtrodden dresser Norman.  Most of the action takes place back stage, with the humour and pathos playing out in the dressing room and corridors juxtaposed against that happening on stage during a performance of King Lear.

Director Florence McFarlane is thrilled to be directing the play at long last and with a dream cast.  “I have wanted to direct this play for years and finally all the pieces are coming together”.

Trevor Rose, who plays Norman, has most recently been directing for Hutt Repertory, while John Marwick, who plays Sir, has come straight from playing Gus in Honour for the Khandallah Arts Theatre. Her Ladyship is played by Joanna Hulme and Madge by Fran Baldock.

Florence believes Eastbourne will respond well to the play, with its theme of unrequited love amidst the British humour of  coping with bombs and air raids.  Some people may also remember the 1983 film adaption starring Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay, which went on to win a raft of awards.
